Where is William Huffman buried?

William Huffman, the father of Oliver, Louisa, Mary and Rosanna Huffman, died August 12, 1842 in Clinton township, Wayne Co., OH. The Wayne County Ohio Burial Records, published in 1975, list a William Huffman, matching the death of my William Huffman, buried in Millbrook Cemetery, Clinton township, Wayne Co., OH. This publication is in alphabetical order.


A reading by the Wayne County Cemetery Preservation Society listed William Huffman. However, in the row by row listing, William Huffman's headstone is not listed. This suggests that the Society used a combination of reading the cemetery and the previously published records.

In trying to locate additional information regarding records on this cemetery, I have contacted the following:

• Clinton township Trustees. They stated they have no cemetery records. 
• Wayne Co., OH Auditor. They could only tell me the location of the cemetery.
• Wooster-Wayne chapter of the DAR. In the 1975 publication, references to the DAR cemetery records are referenced. They do not have any additional information and I should contact the Wayne Co., library.
• The Wayne Co., library. Only an alphabetical listing is available. 
• Schlabach Funeral Home. The trustee suggested I contact them as they supposedly have a listing for Oak Grove Cemetery.

Barring any additional information, I maybe at a dead end. I visited the cemetery recently and took pictures and video of the cemetery. If I had to speculate, perhaps William Huffman is located near the Easons and Freemans (Row 11 and 12). They lived close to one another, based on census records.

Alternatively, he could be buried by the Metcalfs (row 6). Both Thomas and Massom Metcalf died 1840 and 1843, respectively, and lived near the Huffman family. There is some empty space on either side of the Metcalfs.

Merriman Cemetery was formerly known as Boone Grove Cemetery!

Indiana Death Certificates for the early 1900 are available. I found Oliver Huffman's. He died June 9,  1900. He was buried June 10, 1900 in Boone Grove Cemetery.

He has a lovely headstone in the cemetery that we know as Merriman Cemetery, so it is the same Cemetery.

Roxanna Huffman

Oh these Huffmans. They will be the death of me. I have been looking for all of them for years and I still can't figure out several of them. 

1850 US Federal Census

Rovena/Roxena Huffman living several lines above her mother Mary, brother Oliver and sister Jane Huffman (family171). She is living with Silas and Elizabeth Funk (family 169). --in Shreve, Wayne County, Ohio, USA. She is listed as 11 years old, being born about 1839, so most likely 1838/

1860 US Federal Census

Roxanna Huffman is living with her sister and brother-in-law, Austin and Louisa Huffman Morgan and next door to her brother, Oliver Huffman and his family. She  was born about 1839 and is listed as being born in Indiana.-Porter, Porter, Indiana, USA.

I need to dig it out, but Roxanna is mentioned in Austin Morgan's will when he dies in 1863. The estate owes her $400.

1870 US Federal Census

Roxanna Huffman is still living with her sister, nieces, nephews and mother in Porter County, Indiana. Also, I believe her cousin Henry Hoffman (son of Christoph Huffman) is living with them.

1880 US Federal Census

That's it. I can't find her in the 1880 census. 

I've been looking for Roxanna, leaving the name blank, born in Ohio and lived in Indiana. Roxanna isn't a very popular name around this time, so there aren't a whole lot of records. However, there isn't a marriage record in Indiana for Roxanna. Familysearch.org brings up nothing, either. 

Male descendants of Oliver Huffman.

I'm totally geeked out right now.

Reading throughout the (sparse) blog, you'll find a common link. From where was William Huffman? Who are his parents? I've taken several approaches, researching all other Huffmans in Wane County, OH and Porter County, OH to try and find a connection. I have diligently looked for Oliver Huffman's children (not documented here, but rather in my ancestry.com file). Looking for Oliver Huffman's children would potentially have y DNA tested to link to a documented Huffman.

A lot of Oliver's grandchildren were female and I lost hope. However, with the release of the 1940 census, new information on his children was available to search for their children. My efforts have focused on finding descendants of these children in recent weeks.

Looking for more family in the 1940 Census

In Gary, Indiana, there should be a large number of my family. The following were listed in the 1941 Gary, IN city directory:

In the 1930 census, the Bakers were living at 445 Maryland St, which looks like it is at Maryland/5th Ave (US 20/12)

Let's start with the Caulks.

743 Connecticut Ave. is bounded by 7th and 8th Ave. This puts us with ED In the 1940 census, this area is with ED95-10 and ED95-9. Let's go

On page 10 of ED95-10 is 744 and 742 Connecticut St.

On page 17 of the same ED, 749, 745, 741 Connecticut St.

Hm. OK.

@749 are the Reynolds (Frank)-they are living here in 1941, too. and in the 1940 census

745 are the Grogats (Vade or Vacle Angeline)

741 are the Beres, Dan and Victoria are listed at 741 Ct. in the 1941 Directory. They are listed in the census, too.

Were the Caulks just not home? Is that why there were houses missing?

Were they not living there in 1940?

What about the Bakers?

They're living in Clark Station. Previous chats with people who grew up in Clark Station say it is by the airport. Most of the houses are missing today. This area is at N. Clark Ave. and Birch St.

OK. So let's look at the maps for the districts. ED-27 and/or ED-26. Let's start with 27, as this is where the airport is at.

Ahha! Listed as Clark Station, Gary, Lake, Indiana. As expected.

1940 US Census, Enumeration District 95-27, page 61A

1940 Census: Poparads

The 1930 census showed the Popereds living in Gary, Indiana. By the 1940 census, two daughters have left and they are now living in Porter County, Indiana. This should be the spot where the farm house was built and we now know as 1137 Salt Creek Road. Emil would go on to build at 1141 Salt Creek Road. His son, William, would be the last Poparad to live in the farm house. It was torn down and stood vacant until Angella Knapp, Emil's granddaughter, would build her house with her husband Jared and they would move in in 2009. Emil's daughter Marlene lives in the house Emil built.

Ann Poparad was now Ann Toth, living with Bill Toth. They moved to what is now the "S" curve of Old Porter Road. There is a strawberry patch there now. Either way, they are listed a few pages back in the same enumeration district:

I'm still needing to find Jeanne Westberry and her husband, but I think they were living in Lake County at the time.

So, back to the search for Ernest Estepp in the 1940 census. Yesterday I made it through some of the shorter EDs of Mingo County, WV. Now, time to keep searching:

The 1940 Census is the first in which Ernest Estepp should be marked in a census. In 1930, his parents, George and Nettie Estepp, were living on Trace Road, Logan, Logan County, West Virginia, ED 23-16. Using the ED conversion, this puts us in:

1940 Census Release

Well, yesterday April 2, 2012, the 1940 Census was released. Of course, it is not indexed, but it was pretty easy to find the Johnsons and Poparads. The Poparads have lived in the same area now for over 70 years. The Johnson's house just burnt in 2011, though no Johnson descendant has lived there for several years.

In the 1940 US census, Indiana>Porter>Westchest> Enumeration District 64-26, page 4 are the Poparads, with George, Anna, George, Nick, Dan, Rosie, John and Emil. On page two of the same ED is John and Ann Toth. I still need to find the Westberrys.

There is much more for which to search, including the Bakers, but that may have to wait a bit.

Who do you think you are?

I really enjoy this show. I do. You would think, though, that I hated it and I'm pretty sure my husband would agree. My main problem with this show is that they make it look so easy. I'm sure that's part of the premise so that ancestry.com subscription increases, ie, Look! It's so easy! But it's not. Even as I attend monthly meetings at CDGS, I'm amazed at the people who have made so much progress without the technology that I have available today.

Even so, with the resources that are available for the public online in this day and age, it is still necessary to 1) write, call, beg for someone to get the documents one needs from the far away land or 2) travel to the far away land and get them for one's self. The show makes it look like 2 is the easiest option, when in fact, it can be very difficult to actually do so. In my life, I have dreamed of going to Wayne County, Ohio to look at the original land owned by my ancestors. Living in NY, I still have trouble getting to the genealogy section of NYS library that is a mile away.

Jobs, life, family and money all play a factor in getting to the original sources. While I enjoy the show, I wish they would put in one non-celebrity to show how it's a difficult, but full-filling hobby.

Lillian Moore Ray, Part II

I found her!! Previously, I had a woe-is-me episode over Lillian Moore Ray. Well, thanks to FamilySearch Indexers, I broke through!Why is it that it always takes a little creative searching to find what you're looking for?

When we last left off, Lillian Moore had married Franklin Ray. They had three children:

i. Ralph Franklin Ray

ii. Hazel G. Ray

iii. Belluah Ray

Well, let's first examine Ralph Franklin Ray.

A birth record for him appears in the Ohio Births and christenings, 1821-1962. He is b. 22 Aug 1884 in Wellsville, Columbiana, OH with parents of Frank Ray and Nellie Moore. Nellie/Lillian close enough, I'll take it. (Source film 931592/ ref # Bk.3 p.150 cn.297)

In 1900 he was living in Avalon Borough, Allegheny, PA

1910 St. Louis Ward 22.

WWI Draft Card, Mrs. Elizabeth Porter Ray will always know his whereabouts. How about that? PORTER!!! I haven't found their marriage record, yet. They have three children:

i. 1. Elizabeth L. Ray (lillian?)

i. 2. Robert F. Ray (franklin?)

i. 3. Hazel V. Ray (named after aunt?)

I have found much about the children.

The third chid, Belluah, was born 18 July 1894 in Wellsville, Columbiana, OH. (931592 film #, ref #. vol. 5. pg212 #55) No information other then t

hat.

Interestingly, I believe that Hazel has the most information. She was born 07 December 1885 in Wellsville, Columbiana, Ohio ((931592 film #, no ref number given).

She married Cecil Burson, son of G.W. Burson and Jennie Guiney on December 7, 1906. Here is the marriage certificate (left hand, bottom) (film number 0886219, ref. 2:3zpwdwm)

The 1910, 1920 and 1930 census shows three children:

Plenty of poking, typing and banging on they keyboard in both ancestry.com and familysearch.org find the North CArolina Deaths 193101993 for Frank Ray Burson. he was born June 15, 1908 and was a ret. engineer. He died September 28, 1985. He was the son of Cecil Burson and Hazel Ray and was married to Claire Heyden. (film 1991194 ref # v. 37b, cn37587). More googling got me to a son, Ray H. Burson (they love their family names!) He confirms this at the Rutger's Oral History Project. I emailed him a bit ago at an email I found. It hasn't bounced back to me, so hopefully, he can confirm and perhaps give details?

And that gets me excited. And when I explain it to my mom, gets her confused. Finally, something to share at the family reunion!

Bakers in the 1930 Census

Finally. I have found the Baker Family in the 1930 Census. I first searched for Clarence Baker in Familysearch.org and low and behold, the family popped up. There they were: Clarence Lee Baker, Hazel M. Baker and Clarence M. Baker. All the birthdates looked good, as did parent's birth places. FINALLY.

But I searched again in ancestry and did not come up with them. It's not a difficult name. All other documents tell me they've been in the U.S. for a while. But nothing. I've previously searched for Clarence and Hazel in Gary, IN to no avail.

Using the information from familysearch, I looked up the pages in the U.S. 1930 Census manually.

I found them under Barker, Clarence, Habel and Clarence. The annotator must have been drunk that day or something because it's clearly Baker. Oh well. Here it is, finally:

Lillian Moore Ray

Oh Lillian Moore Ray, where art thou? Your father was George Washington Moore and your mother, Martha White. You are my Calvin Moore's half-sister.

You married Franklin Ray, son of Zachariah Ray. You were married 25 September 1880, coincedently, the day I was married, just in the year 2010. Your father and step-mother were married on my birthday. But I digress.

You had three children: Beluah H. Ray, b. 1895, Hazel G. Ray, b. 1886 and Ralph F. Ray, b. 1884 all in Ohio. (These are about years). You lived in Allegany PA for a while and then in 1920, you were living in California. After that, you vanish, both you and your husband.

A potential son was found living in Chicago, IL based on the WWII registrations. But alas, you and your kin disappear.

Christmas as a child

When I was growing up in Indiana, Christmas was a huge event. My grandmother, Sylvia, was an awesome cook and more importantly an awesome baker. I remember the lovely pies on the table, the several days of cookie baking and the cheesecake. Oh the cheesecake!

The days leading up to Christmas was cooking and baking. My mom would go over to help and often a few cousins would come over to have their time with grandma. It was fairly easy as they lived across the field from my grandma and my parent's business was next door. There were nine cousins, my sister and myself, the three who lived across the field and the four who lived down the road.

The day of Christmas evening was spent gathering everything. We would go to grandma and grandpa's house to open presents. Early on, we got gifts from our aunts and uncles and our grandparents. Our moms would always order clothes for us from the Sears and/or JcPenny catalog. We got two outfits each-a dress and a school outfit. more often then not, the girls had matching dress outfits in some way or another. As we got older, we would exchange names with cousins to pick a cousin for which to buy. When we got older, my grandma would take Kelley and I shopping for our own clothes. We'd go to the mall in Michigan City and make a Saturday afternoon of it. We'd have lunch and grandma would always insist we'd have sundaes. One year, I don't remember why-I think it's when grandma fell and broke her hip maybe?- grandpa starting taking us shopping. When he did, we got a lot more then two outfits. I think we would say Grandpa, we can't decide and he'd tell us to get them all and let's go. We just couldn't tell everyone else :)

Christmas Eve was present opening at Grandpa and Grandma Poparad's house. We'd open presents and then have supper. Usually, it was Italian Beef and broasted chicken with potato wedges. There may have been boxed mac and cheese, too. The Italian beef was in the crockpot most of the day and the chicken came from the gas station down the road. Is broasted chicken available outside of NW Indiana? I haven't found it in Texas or New York. I digress. We'd eat, do a fashion show and then usually, go home from there. My cousins went to early church at their church. My mom and grandparents would usually go to midnight service. When I got older, I would often go with them.

Christmas morning was usually early at our house. We'd open presents in the morning and spend the next few hours cleaning up and putting toys together. There were always barbie dolls. I loved playing with my barbies. One year, I remember my sister getting a glow worm. She was probably two or three. I was so excited for her that we opened the present before my parents got up. Then we wrapped it back up. There was the year that there was a present in the back of the tree. My mom put the tree up in a corner. When I reached back for it, the tree fell over and on me. There was the year we go our fake cabbage kid dolls (my dad didn't work a lot) and then the year we got real cabbage patch kids. We each had preemie dolls in our stockings.

My mom loved decorating for Christmas--and still does. There is a santa claus doll that is hand made and I believe my dad made with his grandmother. Or did she make it for him? We had stockings that were made for us and were hung on the back of the front door. No one ever used the front door. We rarely even answered the door bell if someone rang it. If we knew them, they came to the back. When the bay window went in, she built a town with the fake snow and the multitude of buildings. There were Christmas figurines all on the tables. And the Christmas music-always the Christmas music!

After presents, etc., we'd go to breakfast at grandma and grandpa's house. They would have a large dinner at one, but we'd go down to GG Knapp's afterward. When that relationship went side ways, we'd stay for dinner. There was always food, so so much food! Turkey, Swedish meatballs, ham, mashed potatos, and pies. The strawberry pie was my favorite, along with the cheesecake. The female cousins would get one strawberry pie and my two male cousins could share their own strawberry pie. One year, all hell broke lose when there wasn't enough gravy.

We played poker after dinner. Always had many many dishes to clean up. Often, we had to take them upstairs for the dishwasher. We'd wash the china downstairs by hand in the back and dry them on the washer.

Communication with Jim Estepp

I wrote to James Randol Estepp (jim at estepp.net). He was the author of the packet that I received from Doug Estepp, Stephen's uncle.

He has sent me some nice photos of his grandfather, James Albert Estepp (brother of Rhodes) as well as Estep Cemetery, where he thinks Rhodes is buried. I will need to talk to Lisa (Estepp) to confirm what she knows.

Estepp family

So. I have married into the Estepp family. I thought my Kentucky line was confusing! Whoa nelly, these people did not move. At least, though, they changed their names to random names. The only problem is that the spelling of these names are not standardized, so searching can be difficult.

The Estepp family is originally Estep and there are families that are Estepp/Estep in the same generation. My husband's gg-grandfather is Rhodes Estep, who is the son of Jonathan Estepp, husband of Christina Meades. We recently receieved the ancestors and family of James R. Estepp from his uncle. James R. Estepp was the brother of Rhodes Estep. There are a lot of children and families inter marrying.

Stephen and I were married September 25, 2010 at Miller Park Pavillion, Miller Beach, Indiana.

Huffman's of Wayne County, OH

I have had several 'hunches' that my William Huffman is a brother of several of the Huffman's in Clinton township, Wayne County, OH, specifically, Nathaniel Huffman and Christopher Huffman. All were born in New Jersey, with Christopher born 1816 and William born about 1812.  

Nathaniel Huffman:

m. Mary Unknown

had son Levi Huffman born in 1830, Hunterdon, NJ.  

Moved to Wayne County, OH, then to Henry County, OH, where Nathaniel died. Levi moved back to Wayne and eventually to Porter County, Indiana. He had a son Levi Randall Huffman, who married Nellie Hannah Edwards. 

Christopher Huffman married Elizabeth Unknown and was married in NJ. Christopher was born about 1816. Christopher and Elizabeth had 11 children, moving to Wayne County Ohio, then to several counties in Indiana and then finally to Porter County, IN. One of Christopher's children (presumably) is living with William Huffman's family in Porter County, IN in 1880. Christopher died in Porter County, OH. His burial site is not known. 

William Huffman married Mary Kirkoff/Carcuf and was born about 1812 in New Jersey. They had four children: Jane Elizabeth, Maria Louisa, Oliver Huffman and Roxanna. William died in 1842 with the will in probate. His children all located to Porter County, Indiana as noted in previous posts and is my line that I am interested in.

I have no information on the parents of William Huffman, nor do I know where he was born. But, because of the migration patterns of the two other Huffman patterns, it makes no sense that the families are not related. I simply refuse to believe that they are not related. Perhaps this is naive, but it's just too coincidental.

Unfortunately, this family sheet does not list a Nathaniel Ho/uffman. 

A DNA test would be the simplest, unfortunately, the male Huffmans of my William are limited and most moved away from Porter County, IN. At best, there are only five that I can trace around the 1900s. 

The search for William Huffman's wife: Mary

Since I have identified Louise Huffman Morgan Moore, I have sought to find more information about her parents, William and Mary. The information that I have about her mother, Mary:

1850 U.S. Census, Clinton Township, Wayne County, OH.
Living with daughter Jane and son Oliver.
Her birth state is listed as N.J.

1880 U.S. Census Porter Township, Porter County, IN
Living with daughter Maria L. Morgan. Birth age is 73. Born in N.J.
This would make her approximate birth year 1806.

On her son's death index card, she is listed as Mary Carkuff.
On her daughter's death certificateShe is listed as Mary Canbuff (Louisa Morgan, Elkhart County Health Department 10/20/1905)

Numerous searches of ancestry.com pull up Mary Kirkoff, d.o. Gabriel Henry Kirkoff and Mary Lowe, b. 12 Dec. 1805 in Hunterdon Co., NJ and a death of September 5, 1879 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania, USA. While the birth would fit, the death is clearly wrong.

This Mary Kirkoff is often linked to Silas Callendar and the source is listed as http://rkirkhuff.home.attbi.com/kirkhuff.html . However, this url no longer exists. I have not been able to contact the owner of this tree (Scott Williams) to determine what the evidence for this marriage is.

As far as I can tell thus far, there is no evidence of my Mary Carkuff's parents. She may or may not be the d.o. Gabriel and Mary Lowe Kirkoff.

Received Samuel S. Moore Probate Estate. Lists Mary Moore, Washington Moore, James W. Moore and a bunch of other people.

Land transactions with Louisa selling land to her daughter has George Moore living in Wayne County, OH. Back to Ohio we go.

Requested all guardianship and land transactions with George Moore involved.

One guardianship paper listed daughter, Lillian Ray (age listed) filing for power of attorney over George Moore because he's a drunk. Said papers listed wife, Louisa and son, Calvin Moore, living in Indiana.

Search of Lillians born around 1860 show one Lillian living with mother Martha in 1870.

Land records show George W. Moore and wife Louisa Moore (living in Indiana) selling land to Samuel Eason (I think... I don't think Eason is selling to Moore). In it, James W. Moore is listed as having a mortgage on the property.

Plat maps show a G. Moore living next to a J.W. Moore and an Andrew Moore in Franklin Twp. in Wayne county. This area is called Morland.

I think I've finally located the correct George Washington Moore and connected him to a family member. This is based on a land transaction that lists George Moore and his wife, Louisa Moore (selling, I believe) land to Samuel Eason. Holding a mortgage is a James W. Moore. This is not, however, concrete evidence.

On the plat maps, there is a George W. Moore living near a J. W. Moore and Andrew J. Moore in Morland. I suspect that this is my George, as he is listed as divorced in census records and it fits with what our oral history says.

J. W. Moore also owned land in Clinton Township. Also, there was a Andrew Moore as executor of the will of George's wife's father. Put this all together and I think this is the family.

Is anyone connected to these Moores of Morland in Franklin Township? Or even Moores that would have been in Clinton township? The three lands that are together are in Morland and based on the plat maps and Google maps, I believe are bordered by Moreland Road (north side) and Millersburg Road (ohio 83) goes between two of the farms. (there were Millers living there in 1897). Is there anything documented about Moreland anywhere? Or these Moores? (or Moor spelling)

Book "History of Wayne County, Ohio" 1878: East Union Twp John Moore was born in Westmoreland county, PA and was married in Beaver county to Hannah Bevard. They emigrated to Wayne county, in 1814-15, bringing with them their daughter Jane. They settled in East Union township on a farm which Andrew Moore, father of John, several years previously had entered.
